The published milestones behind the number.
The AAFP feline life-stage chart estimates 1 human-age year at 1 month, 4 at 3 months, 10 at 6 months, 15 at 1 year, and 24 at 2 years. After age 2, its values increase by 4 for each additional cat year. [1]
The calculator joins those milestones with straight-line interpolation, then rounds the displayed result. It does not claim that cats and people age through identical biological processes.

A 5-year-old cat is approximately 36 in human-age terms: 24 + 4 × 3.

Is the result exact?
No. Human-age years are an easy comparison, not a clinical measurement. The feline life stage is usually more useful for conversations about care.
Does indoor or outdoor life change the formula?
This calculator follows an age-based AAFP chart and does not change the number by lifestyle. A veterinarian can consider environment, medical history, weight, and behavior when recommending care.
Why do the first two years count so much?
Cats reach physical and reproductive maturity far faster than humans. The published chart reflects that quick early development, then moves to a steadier adult-year comparison.
